Sunaina started practicing yoga with no the intent to teach early on. Initially she found the practice was challenging but also found it was a door to experiencing her body in ways that she had only vaguely sensed before; both kinesthetically and intuitively. The first two years of her yoga practise were an emotional roller-coaster as she floundered amidst feelings that she hardly understood, previously buried deep within her body.
What had started as a healthy yoga addiction soon grew into a consistent yoga practise, honed and accentuated as she moved across continents (South Africa, Europe and then finally Asia). Being trained in Psychotherapy and Counselling, she soon felt confident to teach. She started to teach Yin, Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga forms of yoga. In doing so, she had experienced infinite transformations in all areas of her life, her body and her mind.
This evolutiony journey finally lead to her to the land of yoga itself; Rishikesh. “There was something different about the yoga there – on the banks of the holy Ganges, surrounded by thousands of years of yogic study and practise.” Being in such close proximity to the birthplace of yoga itself and waking to surya namaskars as the sun rose over the hills of the Himalayas was a wonderful and profound experience for her. The teacher’s training course she pursued there gave her a much deeper understanding of herself and her practise. For her, yoga was always more than just going to a studio and taking a class – it was an experience in self awareness and knowledge, a way of life and a way of self study.
Sunaina Rekhi teaches Vinyasa Flow, influenced by Ashtanga Vinyasa comprising of arm balances, inversions, core work and laughter. Sun Salutations are plentiful and varied in a vinyasa style practice. While in most classes one is constantly moving to build heat, some classes are dedicated to holding the poses a little longer in between movement so that you are flowing, yet glowing. She touches on a variety of poses, with a solid standing flow. She also incorporates hip opening, back bending and other restorative poses in the class.
Sunaina’s passionate belief is that we can all learn to utilize the powerful tradition of yoga to promote sustainability and healing for our individual needs, even in our modern ways of life.
